The Bid Blog

Auctions information blog

You’ve found that special item on eBay, and you just have to have it! You enter your bid and wait for the auction to end in five days. Because you’d be happy to beat any bidder, you wait anxiously in the minutes and seconds leading up to the end of the auction. 10 – 9 – 8 – 7 – and then, suddenly, you refresh the page and have been outbid! With only seconds to go, there’s no time for you to place a bid. The listing has ended, and you’re not the winning bidder. It’s just not fair! What can you do to prevent this in the future?

If you spot something on eBay that you have to have, there are several bidding strategies you can use. Some say that the best way is to wait until the very last seconds of the auction before placing any bid. The downside of this is that if you wait too long, or your internet connection has a glitch, you will lose out. If your maximum bid isn’t quite high enough, and you see the dreaded “you’ve been outbid,” you may not have time to enter a second bid. Plus, you’ll need to be sitting on eBay at the exact time the auction ends – which isn’t always possible if the auction ends at 2:00am in your time zone. This can be a stressful way to bid, but if you’re successful, it is definitely a valuable strategy. By bidding at the last second, you don’t give anyone else a chance to outbid you.

What about bidding your highest maximum bid early in the auction? On the one hand, you won’t have that rush of anxiety and adrenaline as the final seconds of the auction count down. If you get outbid, you can rest assured that the item was sold for higher than you were willing to pay. Those who don’t want to get into a bidding war might avoid bidding on that auction after you’ve already placed your bid. However, if they do bid, you can get drawn into a bidding war, driving the price up early in the auction week. If you bid early, you can get caught up in how much you want the item, forgetting to stick to your budget. Over the week-long auction, you’ll start imagining how it will look in your home, and before too long, the price you’re bidding will matter less to you than purchasing the item at any cost.

The act of placing a bid during the final seconds is known as “sniping.” If you want to wait to bid, but don’t want to sit anxiously by your computer, consider a sniping program. There are many programs to choose from; all work by bidding on your behalf during the last seconds of an auction so that you don’t have to be online at that time. You’ll never forget to bid on an item that you were excited about, and there’s no worry that you won’t get your bid in on time. Although there’s no guarantee of winning an auction no matter what bidding strategy you use, the first time you win an eBay auction, you’ll be hooked.
